The Tao Of Sports

Robert Fettgather, Ph.D. is a lifelong student of eastern religions and a sports fan.

In Taoism, the concept of effort revolves around the idea of "wu wei," often translated as "effortless action" or "non-doing." It emphasizes the natural flow of things and the idea that excessive effort can lead to unintended consequences.

In sports psychology, this Taoist approach can be seen in concepts like "being in the zone," where athletes perform at their best when they're fully engaged but not overthinking or overexerting themselves. It's about finding that sweet spot between trying too hard and not trying enough – a state where effort is aligned with the natural course of events, enhancing performance and well-being.

A Taoist perspective suggests that when effort is in tune with the natural rhythm of things, it becomes effective and feels effortless. In sports, this might mean practicing and training with dedication but without straining, allowing the body and mind to work together in a state of flow.
